FAYETTEVILLE 鈥� University of Arkansas Coach Sam Pittman fired offensive coordinator Dan Enos on Sunday, the day after the Razorbacks amassed 200 total yards in a 7-3 loss to Mississippi State.
Receivers coach Kenny Guiton, a former quarterback at Ohio State, will handle play-calling duties for the rest of the season, the Razorbacks announced in a press release.
Enos, 55, was in the first year of a guaranteed three-year contract in his second stint at Arkansas. He was making $1.1 million this season, and he will be owed the remainder of his deal, approximately $2.6 million, in monthly installments through the end of the term.
The Razorbacks have regressed offensively, particularly in the run game, after ranking 15th in the country with 471.2 total yards per game last season.
Arkansas is currently No. 119 in total offense with 305.9 yards per game and No. 114 in rushing with 109 yards per game. The offensive unit, which has a rebuilding line and a largely new receiving corps, has allowed 31 sacks to rank 124th among all FBS teams.
The Razorbacks (2-6) dropped their sixth consecutive game with the homecoming loss, which tied for the lowest-scoring SEC game since 2008.
Pittman was asked Saturday if he would consider any in-season staff changes and he responded, 鈥淚 don鈥檛 really want to answer that.鈥�
Pittman will hold his weekly press conference Monday at noon to address the move and who on the staff will move up to become the program鈥檚 10th on-field assistant coach.
In conference games, the Razorbacks are 14th and last with 267.2 total yards per game, 12th with 19.4 points per game, 13th with 83.6 rushing yards per game, 12th with 183.6 passing yards per game and 10th in passing efficiency.
Arkansas has an open date this weekend before traveling to Florida for a game on Nov. 4. The Razorbacks will have to win out against Florida, Auburn, Florida International and Missouri to become bowl eligible, with the last three games all on campus.
Pittman moved quickly to hire Enos in January after news broke that then-offensive coordinator Kendal Briles was in discussions with TCU Coach Sonny Dykes.
Pittman and Enos had been paired together for one season at Arkansas in 2015 鈥� with Enos as coordinator and Pittman overseeing a veteran offensive line 鈥� when the Razorbacks amassed 6,051 total yards, the third-highest figure in school history behind 6,273 yards in 2010 and 6,128 yards in 2022.
That team, with senior Brandon Allen at quarterback, averaged 465.5 total yards, 197.3 rushing yards, 268.2 passing yards and 35.9 points per game.
But the pairing could not come near those numbers through eight games this season with fifth-year senior KJ Jefferson at quarterback.
Jefferson鈥檚 running has not been as dynamic in the Enos system and his passing efficiency rating is 139.3, 52nd in the FBS, a steep decline from his rating of 164.9, which ranked 7th in the FBS last year.
Enos, a two-year starter at quarterback for Michigan State in 1989-90, compiled a 26-36 record in five years as head coach at Central Michigan (2010-14), his only stint as a head coach, before replacing Jim Chaney for Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema after the 2014 season.
Enos was out with the rest of the Bielema staff at Arkansas after the 2017 season and bounced around from there, taking a very short stint at Michigan before joining Alabama as quarterbacks coach for a 14-1 run during the 2018 season, where he tutored Tua Tagovailoa.
Enos spent the 2019 season at Miami for Coach Manny Diaz and served as offensive coordinator for Mike Locksley at Maryland in 2021 and 鈥�22, where he helped engineer a record-setting passing offense with Taulia Tagaovailoa.
